Read Two Me
"Youth Volunteerism At It's Best!"
If you have ever talked about a book with someone that loves literature, you probably can picture the excitement in their face, hear the passion in their voice, and feel the happiness they emanate when discussing a book they enjoyed reading. It is this experience that is at the core of ReadtwoMe.org The volunteers of this not-for-profit work hard to share their own love of reading with others. I am so proud to call Chase Andreassi a pioneer for ReadtwoMe.org. He gave his time reading and discussing books about baseball with an enthusiastic fan named Joe. Joe is an AHRC-Suffolk participant at our Lincoln Street house in Riverhead. Chase brought Joe’s love of baseball to new levels for an hour each week. They developed a friendship that lasts beyond the discussions of players, teams and ball parks initiated by their reading. Chase gave of himself until a partnership was formed in which he and Joe found a teacher, a student, and a friend in each other every time they met. Chase is an extraordinary person and one of my best volunteers.
"Thank you Chase." Joseph Passaro (Founder of ReadtwoMe.org)
Field Trip to Atlantis Marine World
Amanda Forster, a young woman studying Marine Biology, sponsored a trip for a small group of school-aged students and staff from the AHRC Suffolk Seiff Educare Center to Atlantis Marine World on August 4, 2010. In addition to observing thousands of sea creatures, the students were given the opportunity to participate in interactive displays, such as petting and feeding stingrays, manipulating a ship’s wheel to “steer” through shark-infested waters and touching a variety of undersea life with the guidance of Atlantis employees.

All the arrangements for the trip were made by Ms. Forster, who secured transportation, admission and the private party room where the students were able to enjoy their lunch while still having a view of the shark tank.
While some students enjoyed the sea lion show, most were captivated by the serene displays inside the aquarium, where brightly colored fish swim among beautiful coral reefs. The students were energized and eager to communicate with their peers to share in the experience.

The students were very excited to be a part of this wonderful community experience and Ms. Forster was most sensitive to the special accommodations necessary for the Educare students. Children’s Services Director Victoria Shields and Building Administrator John Driscoll supervised the outing and were most impressed with Amanda's organizational skills and sincere passion for marine life.
