The Children's Services program at AHRC Suffolk specializes
in serving children who are medically fragile and have
multiple disabilities. All students are encouraged to be as
independent as possible, promoting the ideals of inclusive
living. The social worker, family and child meet during the
intake to discuss how we will work together to assist the child
in reaching mutually agreed upon goals. Families are
encouraged to become part of their child's team and are
always welcome in the school environment.

School Age Program
For children age five to twenty-one:
- A full day 5.5-hour education program is available for
eligible children 5-21 years of age. The school age classes
cover a wide variety of educational curriculums and are
based on the child's functional level. Classroom goals and
objectives focus on activities of daily living, cognitive
development, social, and communication and motor skills.
Most children participate in sensory motor activities where
range of motion and massage are part of the daily routine.
The children have an opportunity to develop maintain or
increase their sense of smell, taste, hearing, sight and touch.
The MOVE curriculum is utilized in all classrooms. Mobility
Opportunities via Education assist us in teaching our
students who have severe disabilities the functional skills
needed for life within their home and their community. The
students develop a sense of independence and self-respect.
Students work on vocational skills that are taught in a
sequential manner through the use of task analysis
techniques. Academic readiness and beginning reading,
writing and math curriculums are adapted to the children's
abilities and individual learning styles.
The TEACCH program is used in some classrooms as a
successfully proven curriculum that increases a student's skill
level through structured teaching. TEACCH modifies the
classroom environment to maximize learning by incorporating
routines into the student's day through use of a picture
schedule. These schedules assist the student in transitioning
from one activity to another.

RELATED SERVICES
The Related Services component provides highly specialized
educational and training experiences through physical,
occupational, speech, nursing and play therapy.
Physical Therapy services assists our students in acquiring
increasing amounts of motoric independence necessary for
sitting, standing and walking.
Occupational therapy gives our students a sense of where
they are in space, how their body parts work and increased
skills in the areas of fine and visual motor.
Speech therapy services are provided to children to enhance
their ability to communicate. Using augmentative equipment
for a student that presently does not have the ability to
speak, will often assist the student in developing a means of
making their needs known.
Nursing services are available to all students. Registered
nurses are on site full time and respond to the special needs
of each child, including suctioning, nebulizer treatments,
gastrostomy tube feedings, administration of medications and
the monitoring of seizure activity.

MUSIC-ART-ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Developmentally appropriate music activities are taught and
the children are assisted to participate and appreciate the joy
of music.
Art session provides our students with a multi-sensory
approach. Through the use of different mediums and
techniques via hand over hand, physical or verbal prompts,
or perhaps independently, each student is encouraged to
freely create a 'masterpiece.'
All students have the opportunity to participate in Adaptive
Physical Education to assist them in acquiring gross motor
skills and encourage motor planning. Specialized equipment
such as an air mattress, ball bath, parachutes, adaptive
tricycles, wheelchair swings and steps are available for
utilization during this program.

CHILDREN'S SERVICES believes that each child can
grow, learn and develop a sense of self worth. We
assist families and their child with transition planning
whether it is to a less restrictive environment such as
a school setting in their neighborhood school district,
or moving-on to a Day Treatment, Day Habilitation or
Supported Work Program.
