Vocational Training -- AHRC Suffolk gives adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities the opportunity to learn valuable vocational skills leading to an appropriate community employment situation. We offer vocational assessments and a variety of training experiences – all under the careful supervision of experienced staff who help each individual find his or her ideal job and develop the skills necessary to succeed.

With the help of AHRC staff, participants gain valuable experience before going out into real business settings.

For those young-adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities approaching high school graduation, AHRC Suffolk’s Transition Services program (link to Transition Services Page) works with local school districts to provide students with vocational training in our facilities. Working alongside the adult participants, they learn a variety of skills necessary to increase their employability, and receive assistance when ready to begin their search for competitive employment.

Supported Work and Job Placement -- Often coincided with our Vocational Employment Training Program, AHRC Suffolk’s Supported Work and Job placement Services provides community-based employment opportunities for participants with on-site job coaching services. We connect individuals served in our program with local businesses in search of pre-screened, skilled and highly motivated employees.

To date, we have successfully placed many individuals with developmental disabilities in a variety of employment settings across Long Island. These career fields include: maintenance, food service, assembly and packaging, shipping and receiving, grocery, retail, etc. In fact, many participating business owners and managers comment on the loyalty, reliability and low turnover rate of individuals served in our programs.

The remarkable success of our Supported Work program is due in large part to the ongoing involvement of our experienced job coaches. These men and women remain in close contact with both the employer and our participant employee, and are always ready to help resolve any work-related issues. Should the nature of the job change, they help retrain the participant and prepare them to meet the new challenge.
