Residential Programs
Community Residences (CRs)
and Individualized Residential
Alternatives (IRAs)
The AHRC Community Residence Program creates a
family-like environment for the men and women who live in
our homes. With the help of dedicated live-in houseparents,
we can maximize each individual's dignity, self worth, and
independence. Suffolk AHRC currently operates more than
25 homes in residential communities throughout the county.
Two to nine adults live in each AHRC community residence
(CR) and IRA. With the help of agency professionals, they
work together and form their own new family and support
systems. The men and women who live in our CRs and IRAs
value their adult independence, and respond to it with
increased responsibility and raised self-esteem. Our
community residence program maintains and enhances the
skills and abilities of its residents, giving them an opportunity
to shop, partake in leisure activities, and become part of
their community. CR Houseparents are assisted by a
weekend relief staff and peak hour support staff so that
each resident's individual needs can be met.

Related Services
Individuals living in our CRs and IRAs benefit from social
workers and case managers who help to coordinate all of
their programmatic, living, and social needs. Residents also
receive all related services to which they are entitled
through their AHRC day program.
Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs)
AHRC has a long history of providing the highest quality
clinical services within a loving, safe, and dignified home
environment. The agency's residential program provides
specialized residential opportunities for people with severe
developmental and/or medical issues. Each resident's
distinctive therapeutic needs are met within a homelike
setting. Individuals living in an AHRC Intermediate Care
Facility (ICF) often have a severe secondary medical
component related to their developmental disability, and
therefore each ICF has a full-time nursing staff.
Our residential staff is part of a multidisciplinary team that
helps to determine an individualized program for each ICF
resident. Once designed, the team members also assure
that the program is properly implemented. This promotes
independence in self-care, independent living,
communications, and the use of recreational and leisure
time.

AHRC Respite provides short-term care at some of AHRC's
community residences, and at its freestanding respite home
on the grounds of Flowerfield Gardens in Holtsville.
Circumstances for which families may require respite
services range from unexpected family crisis, to vacation
plans for the family, to the evaluation of a person's skills for
future community residence placement.
